Terms of Service
Last updated: April 12, 2026
- What this is: LegalSimpler is an AI tool that helps you understand legal documents. It's not a lawyer and doesn't give legal advice.
- Your documents: You own everything you upload. We encrypt it, auto-delete after 30 days, and never use it to train AI.
- Accounts: Keep your password safe. You're responsible for activity on your account.
- Payments: Subscriptions renew automatically. Cancel anytime — you keep access until the billing period ends.
- Fair use: Don't abuse the service, scrape data, or try to break things.
- Liability: We do our best but AI isn't perfect. We're not liable for decisions you make based on our analysis.
- Cancellation: You can delete your account anytime. We'll wipe your data within 30 days.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using LegalSimpler ("Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service. These Terms apply to all users, including visitors, free-tier users, and paid subscribers.
2. Description of Service
LegalSimpler provides AI-powered analysis of legal documents for informational purposes only. The Service generates plain English summaries, risk flags, obligation lists, key dates, and glossary terms from uploaded or pasted legal documents. The Service is available via web browser at legalsimpler.com.
3. Not Legal Advice
The Service does not provide legal advice, legal representation, or create attorney-client relationships. AI-generated analysis is for informational purposes only and should not be relied upon as a substitute for professional legal counsel. We strongly recommend consulting a qualified lawyer for all important legal decisions, including but not limited to signing contracts, employment matters, real estate transactions, and business agreements.
4. Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years of age to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that you meet this requirement and have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms.
5. Account Registration
Certain features require account creation. When registering, you agree to:
- Provide accurate, current, and complete information
- Maintain the security of your password and account
- Accept responsibility for all activity under your account
- Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use
We support email/password and Google OAuth authentication. You may have up to 5 active sessions at a time. Sessions expire after 30 days of inactivity.
6. Free Tier
The free tier provides 2 analyses per month with summary-only output. Free-tier users may access the Service without creating an account for their first analysis. Free-tier usage is subject to rate limiting and abuse prevention measures.
7. Subscriptions and Payments
Paid subscriptions (Pro and Business) are billed through Polar.sh (via Stripe), our Merchant of Record. By subscribing, you agree to:
- Authorize recurring charges at your selected billing interval (monthly or annual)
- Provide valid payment information
- Accept that prices may change with 30 days' prior notice
You may cancel at any time from your dashboard. Access continues until the end of the current billing period. No partial refunds are provided for unused time. Refunds for other situations are handled in accordance with Polar.sh (via Stripe)'s refund policy.
8. Single Analysis Purchases
One-time analysis purchases ($2.99 per document) provide full analysis with all sections, PDF export, shareable link, and priority processing. Single purchases require an account. No subscription commitment is required. Single purchases are non-refundable once the analysis has been generated.
9. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
- Upload malicious files, malware, or attempt to compromise the Service
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code
- Resell, redistribute, or sublicense the Service without written authorization
- Circumvent rate limits, quotas, or access controls
- Use automated tools (bots, scrapers) to access the Service
- Impersonate another person or entity
- Upload content that infringes on third-party intellectual property rights
- Attempt to overload or disrupt the Service infrastructure
10. Intellectual Property
You retain all rights to documents you upload or paste. LegalSimpler does not claim ownership of your content. By using the Service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to process your documents solely for the purpose of providing the analysis.
The Service itself — including its design, code, AI models, branding, and documentation — is owned by LegalSimpler and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, or create derivative works from the Service.
11. Data Handling and Privacy
Uploaded documents are encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Files are automatically deleted after 30 days unless you choose otherwise. Pasted text is processed in memory and not persisted to disk. We do not use your documents to train AI models. For full details on data collection, retention, and your privacy rights, see our Privacy Policy.
12. AI Processing and Third Parties
Document content is sent to third-party AI providers (via OpenRouter) for analysis. These providers process your content according to their own terms of service. We select providers that commit to not using customer data for model training. We are not responsible for the data handling practices of third-party AI providers beyond our contractual agreements with them.
13. Service Availability
We aim to provide 99.9% uptime but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. The Service may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, updates, or circumstances beyond our control. We will provide reasonable notice for planned maintenance when possible.
14. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, LEGALSIMPLER SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Decisions made based on AI-generated analysis
- Loss of data or business interruption
- Inaccuracies or omissions in analysis results
- Unauthorized access to your account
Our total aggregate liability shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid for the Service in the 12 months preceding the claim, or (b) NZ$100.
15. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that analysis results will be accurate, complete, or error-free. See our Disclaimer for more details.
16. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless LegalSimpler and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party rights.
17. Termination
You may terminate your account at any time from your dashboard settings. We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, engage in abuse, or fail to pay applicable fees. Upon termination:
- Your right to use the Service ceases immediately
- We will delete your data within 30 days (except as required by law)
- Outstanding payment obligations remain due
- Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive
18. Modifications to Service
We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. We will provide reasonable notice for material changes. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
19. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or through the Service at least 14 days before they take effect. Your continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
20. Dispute Resolution
Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall first be attempted to be resolved through good-faith negotiation. If negotiation fails, disputes shall be resolved through binding arbitration in Auckland, New Zealand, in accordance with the Arbitration Act 1996.
21. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of New Zealand, without regard to conflict of law principles.
22. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
23. Entire Agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Disclaimer, constitute the entire agreement between you and LegalSimpler regarding the Service.
